Presidential Election 2016

24 hours ago, i woke up from anxiety over the election. i had tried to avoid the news all Tuesday night as the polls closed and the votes were counted, but i figured 1:30 AM would be a good time to check. i was surprised, alarmed, and disheartened to see that Trump was leading in the Electoral College map, winning many battleground states by 1-3%. i couldn't sleep, so i read Nikita fanfic to distract myself while periodically checking NPR Politics' twitter feed, becoming more and more distressed as Trump's points racked up while Hillary's stayed in the low 200s. finally, around 3 AM, it happened. Trump reached 270, and he became the future President of the U.S. i lied there in bed, staring at my Kindle screen. i couldn't believe it. "this isn't happening. this isn't real. wake up, wake up, wake up. oh my god. how did this happen? how did we let this happen? how could you, America?" shell-shocked and upset, i got up and ate 3 slices of my birthday chocolate cake but felt no matter.

like everyone else, i didn't see this coming. none of the polls showed Trump at 48%; he was expected to lose by 3-5%. i had been worried but pretty sure, deep down, that Hillary would win. i had faith in America's decency and common sense. i believed that no matter how much people hated Hillary, they would see that no one could be worse than Trump, a despicable, racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, fear-mongering, hate-spreading demagogue; a lying, cheating, crooked fraud who cons charities, students, businessmen, the government, and the American people; an immature, temperamental, petty little man who can't handle Twitter much less the nuclear launch codes; a disgusting, shameless, entitled sexual predator who uses his power and money to take advantage of women and boast about it; a big-mouthed wind bag showman who has no place in the Oval Office.

in the morning, i did errands, went to lunch with Dad (belated birthday buffet), shopped at Aldi, went to R's house and took comfort in my kitties, went tutoring, ate dinner, came home, and re-watched more Nikita to escape. i had stayed off the internet the whole day, but 2 hours ago, i finally logged on to read the reactions.

the tweets of Muslim women now too afraid to wear their Hijab for fear of anti-Muslim attack broke my heart, while J.K. Rowling's words made me tear up: "The easy thing is to keep your head down & let the bullies run amok. The right thing to do is to challenge racism, misogyny and hatred. [reply: How do we even move forward from here?] We stand together, we stick up for the vulnerable. We challenge bigots. We don't let hate speech become normalised. We hold the line." Then I watched Hillary's concession speech and started sobbing.
  • "Our campaign was about the country we love and about building an America that's hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.
  • We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. But I still believe in America and I always will.
  • Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power and we don't just respect that, we cherish it. It also enshrines other things; the rule of law, the principle that we are all equal in rights and dignity, freedom of worship and expression. We respect and cherish these values too and we must defend them.
  • The American dream is big enough for everyone -- for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people, and people with disabilities. For everyone.
  • Please never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it. It is--it is worth it.
  • I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but some day someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now.
  • And to all the little girls, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams."
I cried, not just because I was disappointed that Hillary lost, but because I was so disappointed in the American people, the divided country we've become, the hate that Trump stoked, and the fear that so many minority groups are feeling right now because of it. I feel like I've lost faith in my fellow man. And yes, I really wanted Hillary to be the 1st female president, because it's about damn time, and she's the most qualified candidate ever, and she's dedicated her life to public service but has been trashed, maligned, mistreated, and persecuted for years, all because she was/is a smart, ambitious career woman, a nontraditional politician's wife and a politician in her own right, a cunning, "unlikable", feminist and powerful public figure. Yes, she's made some mistakes, but they are always overblown even though they're nowhere near Trump's innumerable disqualifications. It's just so unfair, especially since Hillary won the Popular Vote even though she lost the Electoral Vote. Will our country ever change this outdated and unfair system? (can we at least implement Australia's "vote by ranking" system where, if your 1st choice doesn't get a majority, your 2nd choice gets the vote, and so on, until there's a winner? that way, there's no "wasted vote" for 3rd parties, which is exactly how Hillary lost, because those damn "morally pure" voters gave 5% to (terrible) 3rd party candidates and let Trump win, goddamnit!)

so now it's 1:30 AM, and i'm still breaking down into sobs while watching Stephen Colbert's last election night coverage. i'm on my 30th tissue. i have never cried over an election, but then, we've never had an election like this before, with such vastly different candidates and values, such fear and loathing of the other side, such high stakes for the future of America, its people, the world. *sigh* such disappointment. T_T

update: now sobbing over 2 letters from writers behind my political heroes The West Wing and Parks and Recreation. Aaron Sorkin, the genius behind TWW, wrote a letter to his daughter, promising her that we won't hand the next generation a "country shaped by hateful and stupid men," we will fight and get involved, fight for everyone's rights and equality and against injustice. then Leslie Knope from P&R wrote a funny, poignant, stirring letter to America, saying that we will not accept that we have succumbed to hate and fascism, we will keep fighting, thinking, learning, and working together. "He is the present, sadly, but he is not the future. You young girls are the future. Your strength is a million times his. Your power is a billion times his. We will acknowledge this result, but we will not accept it. We will overcome it, and we will defeat it." *ugly crying*

Big/Small Birthday

it's supposed to be a big deal, but i like that it was low-key. with everything else going on (like moving, ack!), my birthday kind of snuck up on me. i knew it was coming, obviously, but i was more focused on other events in the same week than making plans.

i got a bday coupon ($5 off!) from my local comic shop, so i stopped by during their Halloween ComicFest. there were lots of customers, costumes, cookies, and comics. ^^ picked up some fun free comics and a few issues from my "pull" folder: New Super-Man #1 (gotta support the new Chinese superhero), Blue Beetle Rebirth (my baby Jaime is back and so is Ted!), and Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special ($8 for a mega-sized issue from a long list of iconic creators).

kinda surprised i didn't get a bday coupon from Olive Garden or Village Inn this year, but i guess their regular seasonal coupons are about the same anyway. and in any case, we didn't go to either. Dad's back prevented him from going out, so we postponed our lunch. dinner with Mom and R was just the Chinese buffet again, because it's convenient and pretty reliable for quality food at a decent price. i ate my favorites (sweet potato tempura sushi, potstickers, lo mein, pork chops, mac 'n cheese, "crab" rangoons, almond cookies, ice cream) and left happy.

a few days later, we shopped at Aldi, and i got my favorite cake, their medium-sized triple chocolate bundt cake. it's so moist and delicious, but it's not too sweet, even with the choc chips over choc glaze over choc cake. mmmm, so good. <3

TV Watch List 2016

Spring 2016
  • iZombie - quirky, witty procedural that has become a surprise fav; love Ravi.
  • Reign - strong S3, even after Francis' death </3 & splitting story into 3 queens in 3 countries; love seeing Mary in Scotland finally; Frary forever otp.
  • Jessica Jones - Marvel/Netflix series 2; glad for another female superhero lead, totally different from Supergirl; gritty, sometimes sad/disturbing, but well-made urban noir; only watched half so far...
  • Downton Abbey - final season! good ending; will miss the Dowager.
  • Agent Carter - 2nd & sadly last season; not as good as S1, maybe Hollywood setting, lack of chemistry w/ love interest #3, notp w/ #2, clumsy development w/ #1; no resolution to her story (when/how did she start SHIELD? what happened to her bro? who does she marry? =P); will miss her character and show.
  • Daredevil - S2, still excellent; liked the addition of Elektra & Punisher (thought they were psycho at first but then grew to like them?); weirdly Matt/Elektra otp.
Summer 2016
  • The 100 - "social justice" fandom wars aside, S3 was involving & intense, not as strong as S2, but got better in 2nd half; still raises fascinating moral questions w/ high stakes drama & non-stop action. also, Bellarke otp.
  • Orphan Black - omg to everything, still the best sci-fi drama; so happy Tatiana Maslany finally won her much-deserved Emmy! but so sad S5 will be the end T_T.
  • Game of Thrones - binged S5 & S6 together; saw why S5 was not well-received (mistreatment of female characters) while S6 was (female empowerment); suddenly the ladies are ruling everything and i love it! looking forward to last 2(?) seasons.
  • The Musketeers - new fav show (until Nikita?); binged S1+2, waiting for S3, last one T_T.
  • Mr. Robot - binged S1, unique, smart, intriguing, trippy, fascinating drama about hacktivism, capitalism, conspiracy, freedom, and mental illness; waiting for S2.
  • Shadowhunters - S1 was not bad, a flashy adaptation of The Mortal Instruments book series; liked most of what they kept & what they changed/added (like Lydia Branwell); not quite feeling the great Clace, but Sizzy is flirty cute, & Malec otp is on point (thanks to charismatic & gorgeous Matthew Daddario & Harry Shum, Jr.).
Fall 2016
  • Supergirl - S2 on CW so smaller budget, more rain (BC instead of LA), and less Cat Grant wit, but Superman, Miss Martian, & Legion of Superheroes, not to mention the epic 4-show DC/CW crossovers, so still very excited! [EtA: so good, surprisingly became the DCTV show i look forward to most this season. really enjoyed the addition of Clark, Snapper Carr, Lena Luthor, Cadmus, Wonder Woman Lynda Carter as Madam POTUS!, Mon-El, M'gann, Maggie Sawyer, even Dichen Lachman as Roulette!] Kara/Mon-El & Malex(?Sanvers?) otp (tied!)
  • The Flash - Flashpoint is coming! & Kid Flash & hopefully Barry/Iris. [EtA: FP was cool; post-FP story even more interesting. yay, Jesse Quick & Killer Frost!] WestAllen otp.
  • Jane the Virgin - still a consistently enjoyable family dramedy fav.
  • Superstore - funny workplace comedy about Wal-Mart shenanigans; like the diverse cast (esp lead America Ferrera from Ugly Betty); binged S1, now on S2.
Current Binge-Watch
  • Nikita - new fav show for Mom & me! liked the premise, cast, writing, & style from the 1st ep & loved the whole 1st season of spy plots, missions, conspiracies, & twists; halfway into S2 now, at rate of about 1 season/week, will be very sad after 4th & final season. [EtA: finished the whole series & am so upset that this wonderful show only lasted 3.3 seasons (even though it's 100x better than Arrow which is on S5, why?!). the magic of S1 did fade a teensy bit w/ each season, but S4 gave a satisfying ending to wrap up the story at least. T_T] Mikita otp.
  • Poldark - liked S1, though not quite engaged w/ Cornwall mining problems; definitely more involved w/ family drama. [EtA: especially riveting in S2. really looking forward to S3!] Romelza otp.
  • Victoria - new British historical drama about Queen Victoria. [EtA: beautiful acting & directing, lush visuals, & delicious romance. love it & can't wait for S2!] Vicbert otp.
Catch Up Later
  • Arrow - ugh, i want to drop it like Gotham because it's becoming a chore to watch, but i'll stick around just to keep up with DCW-verse and Laurel/Canary who deserves better (and will hopefully get it when she hops around different DCW shows). [EtA: still have not watched this season. can i get away w/ skipping it? except for crossover or Laurel eps.]
  • DC's Legends of Tomorrow - a little messy but a lot of fun sci-fi action with superhero team-ups.
  • Vixen - 2nd season (or full-length feature) of CW Seed's animated web series in DCW-verse.
  • Gotham - dropped after "gritty" S1; want to watch just for baby BatCat otp and snarky Alfred.
  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - stupid (subversive) title but clever, funny, surprisingly poignant and relevant musical comedy; satirizes society and pop culture while dealing with 20s identity crises and mental illness.
  • Elementary - still a consistently enjoyable (better than Sherlock) procedural drama fav.
  • [FYI: Constantine and Forever - both "one-season wonder" favs available for free streaming on CW Seed!]
Maybe Someday?
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine - based on tumblr, looks just as funny & charming as fav Parks & Rec.
  • Fresh Off the Boat - watched part of S1, sometimes funny/cheesy/relatable; support Asian-American rep!
  • Lucifer - never watched but got renewed (unlike poor Constantine) so maybe?
  • This Is Us - interesting concept: drama about different people with the same birthday (who turn out to be all from the same family); liked the story & cast (Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley from Smallville, etc.), but dropped after 2 eps because NBC won't stream; DVD later?
  • Designated Survivor - cross between The West Wing and Quantico, promising drama, intrigue, issues, & cast (Kiefer Sutherland, Natascha McElhone, Maggie Q, Kal Penn, Virginia Madsen, etc.)
  • Salem - supernatural show about witches & witch-hunters looks promising; plus after A Walk To Remember and Nikita marathons, my Shane West crush has intensified.

Batman Day 2016

Went to Barnes & Noble for another DC event: Batman Day. Got some coloring pages and a free comic: [DC Rebirth] Batman #1: Batman Day Special Edition. There was a costume contest, a scavenger hunt to search the store for cards with Batman characters on them, and another trivia contest. The trivia was more basic than the last set, plus multiple choice, so it was pretty easy. The questions were just about various Bat characters, and I think the hardest one was like, "What day did The Dark Knight Rises come out in theaters?" or something. While we waited for the prize drawing, Mom and I ordered a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino from the B&N Starbucks. It was so yummy and refreshing! After like the 5th winner was selected, we figured the contest was over so we got up to go. On the way to the door, the staff picked my entry and said I'd won a prize! I got a Batman v Superman mini poster set! They're rolled up in a "blind box" package so you can't see which 2 of the 8 designs you get. (I'd actually seen them in the Bargain section last time I was at B&N, so I guess they're trying to get rid of them.) I ended up with a simple BvS logo poster and a movie still of Superman. Not sure where I'm going to put them, or if I'll take them out at all, but yay for free stuff and surprise prizes! ;)

"The 100" Fandom Wank

PLEASE, enough with the negativity, one-upmanship, & rudeness. it's so sad and unnecessary. why do there have to be "winners and losers" when it's not even a competition? it wasn't a love triangle. Clarke didn't choose one over the other and then "switched" sides. it's more like two difference races. Clexa jumped over all the hurdles of outside forces, pressures, & responsibilities and reached the finish line together, confessing & consummating their love. it was a hard-earned & short-lived victory, but it was beautiful and real. Lexa leaving & Clarke entering a different race altogether doesn't negate that win. Bellarke are like a marathon where they each share the burdens of a long, seemingly endless race for survival and redemption, and there may not even be a finish line other than death (it doesn't have to be romantic), but they are in it together & they can't do it without the other. both are real, important races in Clarke's life, but they're not competing against each other. peace~

Barnes & Noble - DC Comics Event

I went to DC Night of Barnes & Noble's Get Pop-Cultured series of geektastic store events.

It started at 8 PM with some freebies: Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad #1 Special B&N Edition, DC Super Hero Girls Sampler with previews of DCSHG: Finals Crisis graphic novel and Supergirl at Super Hero High novel, the DC Essentials 2016 Catalog, and a large promo poster of the catalog's cover.

There was a Buy-2-Get-a-3rd-Free Sale on DC graphic novels, but I'd already bought my DC Bombshells books, so I didn't have anything to buy. The children's department had DC Comics bingo and Bat-symbol mustache paper crafts for the couple of families with young kids, while the adult fans like me tried the trivia contest. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the trivia pages, but here are some of the questions I remembered:

DC Comics Trivia:
  1. What was the name of Aquaman's pet octopus? - ??? [Answer: Topo]
  2. Which aliens did the Justice League first team up to fight?  - Starro? [Appelaxians]
  3. Superman's shield means "Hope," but something else entirely when upside down... - Rebirth? [Resurrection]
  4. How often must a power ring be charged? - every 24 hours
  5. How does Superman enter his Fortress of Solitude? - with a giant [yellow, arrow-shaped] key
  6. The Green Lantern Corps oath goes: "Beware my power..." - Green Lantern's Light
  7. Wonder Woman comes from Paradise Island, also known as... - Themyscira
  8. What is the name of Wonder Woman's mother? - Hippolyta
  9. What is the name of the interdimensional imp that gives Superman trouble? - Mr. Mxyzptlk
  10. How does The Flash travel through time? - Cosmic Treadmill
  11. How does The Atom travel quickly? - shrinks and pulses through telephone lines
  12. Two of The Flash's villains are from the future. Reverse Flash &... - Professor Zoom? [Abracadabra]
Suicide Squad Trivia:
  1. In what comic book did the Suicide Squad first appear? - Brave and the Bold
  2. In what year did the Suicide Squad first appear? - 1959
  3. What gives Killer Croc his unique appearance? - skin mutation [disease]
  4. What is Deadshot's real name? - Floyd Lawton
  5. What is Harley Quinn's full name? - Harleen Francis Quinzel
  6. What is the official government name for the Suicide Squad? - Task Force X
  7. What is the name of the prison for the Suicide Squad? - Belle Reve
  8. How did Harley Quinn meet the Joker? - She was his psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum.
  9. What is Captain Boomerang's real name? - Digger Harkness
  10. What is the name of Katan's sword? - Soultaker
  11. What is Killer Croc's real name? - Dwayne? [Waylon] Jones
  12. Which comic book had the first appearance of Deadshot? - Batman / Detective Comics
  13. Which comic book had the first appearance of El Diablo? - Brave and the Bold? [All-Star Western]
  14. Which comic book had the first appearance of Slipknot? - Brave and the Bold? [Fury of Firestorm]
  15. Who is in charge of keeping the Suicide Squad in line? - Amanda Waller & Colonel Flagg
  16. Amanda Waller works for which government agency? - Checkmate / ARGUS
  17. Captain Boomerang is in whose rogues gallery? - The Flash
  18. Who created Harley Quinn? - Bruce Timm & Paul Dini
  19. What is the name of the woman possessed by Enchantress? - June Moone
I think there were 20 questions in each set, but these are all I can remember. They were pretty tough, but I surprised myself with how many I knew. I had to make some educated guesses on a handful, but only the octopus one stumped me. Filling out the trivia pages probably took me 10-15 minutes. When I turned them in, the staff girl said I was the first one done. (She also complimented my Wonder-Bomb tee and said she loves DC Bombshells, too.) Later, we checked the answers, and overall, I got only 3 wrong each, so that's 85% correct.

And I'd won a prize! :D (Yay, useless fandom knowledge! XD) The girl handed me a plastic bag with a Batman tumbler and rolled-up paper, which she said was a mini Wonder Woman poster! I said, "that's perfect," pointing to my shirt again, but I had no idea how perfect. When I unrolled the poster, I was delighted to find, not just any WW, but my favorite DC Bombshells "Wondy the Riveter" cover art. ♥ I've always wanted a print of this to hang on my wall. ^__^

After thanking the staff for a fun night (there were no more activities), I got ready to go (R was still waiting for me!). Before I left, the girl said if I like Harry Potter (which, of course!), then next weekend, the store will host a Harry Potter party for the release of the script book for the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plays. I worried that I might be too old to go, but they told me that people of all ages attend, and in fact, it's mostly people who grew up with HP and who are now adults. Hehe. So I said it sounds like fun and I might call my friends to go like we used to. (I wonder if Sara will be free?)

I left happy, and R and I got Sonny's BBQ drive-through for dinner, which was quite fast and very yummy (mmm, brisket...). ^_^

To Congress, Re: Gun Control, Part 2

Sent my reply to my representative's lame response to my earlier rant:
Thank you for the response to my earlier email about Gun Control, Congressman. Thank you for politely informing me of House procedures. I understood that the bill did not pass the Senate or the Committee, but Americans are still asking for the bill, a bi-partisan revision, or at least a conversation about it. The GOP, however, refuse to even bring it up because they fear a small but powerful lobby more than they respect the clear wishes of 90% of their constituents. I would rather have Congress break a few of their procedural rules to actually get important work done, than using those rules as a way to escape their responsibilities and place blame on others. But that is beside the point, as was your response, which did not even address my main point: Universal Background Checks and No Fly, No Buy are the simplest, most common sense measures you can enact for National Security. Everyone knows this, and yet it is still blocked by Congressmen like you because of the NRA. Your response did not even attempt to justify it. I don't expect or want a response, because I already know the line about "protecting" our rights. The GOP hides behind the literal interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, even though it says "well regulated" and obviously criminals and terrorists should automatically lose their right to bear arms, while the rest of us retain our right and our guns, so there would be no infringement on our rights. This is not even about an assault weapons ban, which is the equivalent of not allowing citizens access to weapons of mass destruction while the government does. This is just the most basic gun control which should already be in effect, were it not for the gun lobby and their Congressional puppets. Yes, you may be of service to me, my family, Orlando, and America by doing your job as our representative. So PLEASE, go REPRESENT us, address our concerns, listen to our wishes, and work for the people's interest. If you will not, if you continue to fail at your elected position, then the people will find someone who will represent us. Thank you.

"The 100" and POV

Reasons Why the Ambush on the Grounder Army was Justified (not right, but understandable from Arkadia's position):

(1) There is no reason to trust an "ally" who already betrayed you and left you to die. There was an alliance, and Lexa broke it, so why should Arkers just readily believe that, oh, she means it this time? (And her devotion to Clarke doesn't count. Arkers have no idea what went on in Polis. Clarke, Kane, & Abby made the decision to become the "13th Clan" without any input from their people, who had been hurt by Grounders repeatedly since they landed.

(2) Even if Lexa did intend to protect SkyKru, she did not have the power to do it. She lost the faith and support of her people, the Coalition ambassadors tried to remove her as Heda, & most of the Clans rejected or wanted to kill SkyKru. This and the Ice Nation attack on Mt. Weather proved that Lexa could not control the army she sent, even if she sent it to protect Arkadia.

(3) So Arkers can't trust Lexa to keep her word or to keep them safe. Instead, all they see is an army of "peacekeepers" on their doorstep, which is easily seen as a threat or an act of oppression. An army of Grounders who are just as mistrustful/prejudiced/hateful of SkyKru as Arkers are of Grounders. There's no guarantee that the Grounders won't defy Lexa and destroy the Ark civilization. The claim of 4 leaders (Clexa & Kabby) who no longer speak for most of their peoples, is not enough to change months of war and betrayal into a true alliance of peace.

(4) In fact, Arkers were right to fear the army camped outside, because after Lexa died, the army would have turned on Arkadia and wiped them all out without warning. Ontari said as much, and anyway, most Grounders wanted to. The truce was a powder keg that would have exploded into full-blown war again if they hadn't united for the ALIE threat.

Was it wrong to massacre the army? YES. (And Bellamy struggled with it the whole time, the same way ALL the characters do when they do something bad "for the greater good.") Was it done without reason though? NO. They had legit reasons, and they felt they had no other choice (again, same as every character's motivation). Just like what Clarke and Bellamy did at Mt. Weather, Bellamy knew it was wrong but did it anyway to protect his people and took on the burden of guilt, like Clarke said, "I bear it so they don't have to."

The 100 is all about moral ambiguity, and "there are no good guys," which means there are no bad guys either, just people trying to protect their people. Each season's "Bad Guy" has not been evil, just standing on the other side with a different perspective of what is "best" for people.

Furthermore, Arkers and Grounders are held to different moral standards by the audience. Arkers are more like our society and therefore more relatable, while Grounders are a warrior culture from a harsh, post-apocalyptic Earth where "Blood Must Have Blood." Grounders wiping out their enemies is awesome in a Game of Thrones/300 way, but Arkers removing a very real, direct threat (1 army of many) is sickening to our modern sensibilities. (To be fair, killing an armed militia--a real threat--is NOT the same as gunning down innocent civilians--an imaginary threat.)

Pike & Co. had been victims of so much violence that they felt that the only way to survive was to be as ruthless as the Grounders (Ice Nation). So it makes sense that they would use a despicable night ambush with guns against swords. I personally feel that it was out-of-character of Bellamy (even w/ PTSD) to go along with the plan. I expected him to just warn the army to get off Arkadian lands before fighting broke out, but it should be noted that he tried to save the wounded, but Pike killed them.

Bellamy IS partially responsible, and everyone does hold him responsible, including himself, just like Clarke IS partially responsible for Tondc too. Just because she didn't launch the missile herself doesn't excuse her failure to save everyone there when all she had to do was warn them. And why is the death of 1 Grounder army to protect ALL of your people "unforgivable," but the Mt. Weather genocide (killing every man, woman, & child) to save a group of friends "justified"? These are the kind of impossible moral questions that The 100 asks, and the answer is always, "It depends on your point of view," even when it's hard to see characters' POV. The point is to try. "There are no good guys."
