Kittens: 2 Days Old

R adopted a stray cat near her workplace. The cat, named Hope, was heavily pregnant and gave birth to 6 kittens about a week later. The litter was born on June 28, 2014. (Mom and I were visiting M so we missed that.)

2 days later, they came back from the vet, and I met Mama Cat and Kitties for the first time. Hope was naturally very wary with strangers approaching her but surprisingly chill about us getting near her babies. I expected some hissing and yowling, but she just stared as I took pictures of the adorable little things.

Look how small the runt is compared to the rest of its siblings!

Reading

I really don't read as much as I should/would like. Lately, it's just been easy-to-digest romance novels or YA fantasy on Kindle (or fanfic heh ;). Fun pastimes but no new Harry Potter. I don't think any book or series can come close to that magical quality and level of love I have for HP.

When I got into Game of Thrones a couple of years ago, I started reading G.R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. It was very well-written fantasy with multiple POVs and lots of action/drama. I finished the 1st 3 books relatively quickly but only got through a few chapters of Book 4 before the fandom madness phase started to wane. Also, the TV show is diverging from the books more and more, so to keep things straight, I'd rather focus on the show's story before going back to the books.

Recently, Mom and I kinda got into The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare after its first (and only) movie adaptation, which I liked more than I expected. The books were a bit different but pretty good YA urban fantasy with interesting mythology and world-building. The 6th and last book in this series just came out, so we took turns reading the library copy. It was an epic and satisfying end, and I'm glad some of the characters will return in the sequel series The Dark Artifices.

More importantly (to me), TMI led us to its prequel series The Infernal Devices, a Victorian steampunk adventure. I got into this one more because I really like the characters, especially Jem Carstairs, a half-British, half-Chinese shadowhunter who's dying from a demonic drug addiction. Sounds weird, but he's written as such a warm, caring, compassionate, witty, musical, overall perfect gentleman, and he's now my secret literary boyfriend. XD; (Jem <3)
